Airlines suspend flights after passenger plane is shot at while landing

MAJOR airlines have suspended services to Baghdad after a passenger plane came under fire as it landed.

Two passengers, including a young girl, were reportedly injured as the Flydubai aircraft landed at Baghdad International Airport in Iraq on Monday.

Sources said the attack was launched from an area close to the runway where the plane landed.

Islamic State are in control of large areas of Iraq but have not claimed responsibility for the shooting.

A Flydubai spokesperson said: "After landing damage to the aircraft fuselage consistent with small arms fire was discovered on Flydubai flight FZ215.

"An investigation is underway to establish what happened."

Emirates and Etihad have both suspended flights to Iraq's capital until further notice.

Emirates, one of the world's largest airlines, said they had suspended flights for "operational reasons".

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers," the company said.

Fears of commercial airlines flying into conflict zones were heightened last year after a Malaysia Airlines plane came down over eastern Ukraine.

It is strongly believed MH17 was shot down as all 298 people on board were killed.

Last year the US told airlines flying over Iraq to remain at higher altitudes while travelling over the country.
