Steven Gerrard:
Why I decided to leave Liverpool
STEVEN GERRARD quit Liverpool because he was told he wouldnt start every game.
The Anfield skipper said he was unable to accept NOT being a regular starter.
The key was when the manager said it was time to manage my games, said Gerrard, who will join an MLS club in America this summer.
It was a very difficult conversation to have.
I had an idea it was going to come but it was a painful one to to have when youve been a starter and a mainstay in the team for such a long time.
It was a very difficult conversation to have but Im bright enough to realise it is the right thing.
I accept ity and Ill continue to give everything Ive got whether Im starting, coming off the bench or whatever.
Boss Brendan Rodgers revealed he DIDNT offer Gerrard a coaching role at the club becasue he didnt think he was ready.
Gerro, 34, who joined Liverpool as an eight-year-old, was tipped to stay at the club for life but has instead opted for a new career in the States.
Manchester United made long-serving Ryan Giggs a coach when he retired in 2013 but Rodgers did not think it was the right move to make with Gerrard even though he is already working towards his UEFA badges.
The Liverpool boss said: He wasnt ready to move into coaching. He sees himself very much as a player.
I do genuinely believe he can offer great advice, if its something he wants to do in the future.
But coaching and management isnt something you can click your fingers and move into. Theres a lot of work, time and commitment.
I always tell players that if you want to move into coaching or management, take two or three years to really get your eye in on it.
Its a pressure situation. If you havent been accustomed to that, its difficult. Stevies never known anything other than the elite level.
When youre working as a coach or a manager, youre working with a different type of player.
But if he really wants to go down that route and focus on that, theres no reason why he couldnt succeed.
And one ex-Kop skipper reckons theres a ready made replacement.
Jamie Carragher jokingly tweeted: Enough of Gerrard now hes leaving. Replacement has to be Ross Barkley. Offer 10 million go to 12 tops job done.
MLS giants LA Galaxy have been mooted as a possible destination for the former England skipper, but Gerrard said he is yet to agree terms with a club.
Im not over the line with any team yet.
Im close and as soon as I know. I will make an announcement, he said.
