AirAsia flight QZ8501 MISSING with 162 people on board
AN AirAsia flight QZ8501 is missing with 162 people on board after it lost contact with air traffic control between Indonesia and Singapore.
A search and rescue operation is underway for flight QZ8501 which lost contact at 7.24am (23:24 GMT) flying from Indonesian City of Surabaya to Singapore.
Indonesian officials said the crew requested to take an unusual route to avoid cloudy weather shortly before contact was lost.
The captain, who has 6,100 flying hours, reportedly requested to increase altitude due to the bad weather.
In a statement the company said there were 155 passengers on board, with 138 adults, 16 children and 1 infant. Also on board were 2 pilots and 5 cabin crew.
The passengers and crew include 156 indonesians, three South Koreans, one French national, one Malaysian and one Singaporean according to AirAsia.
AirAsia has set up an emergency line for family or friends of those who may be on board. The number is +622 129 850 801.
The airline, which has changed its logo from red to grey on its website in light of the incident, is also issuing updates via Twitter and their website.
An official with the transport ministry, Hadi Mustofa, told local media the plane lost contact over the Java Sea, between the islands of Kalimantan and Java.
Tony Fernandes, the company's chief executive tweeted: "Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. We must stay strong."
He added: "My only thought are with the passangers and my crew [sic]. We put our hope in the SAR operation and thank the Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysian governments."
AirAsia Indonesia is an affiliate of the Malaysian company AirAsia, which operates domestic flights around Indonesia as well as international services to Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Thailand.
The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC.
AirAsia Indonesia was banned from flying to the European Union in 2007 due to safety concerns but this ban was lifted three years later.
This missing flight comes nine months after another Malaysian flight, Malaysian Airlines MH370, went missing while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
MH370 was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members. The plane has yet to be found.
Just four months later, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, flight 17, was shot down over the Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.
