RUTHLESS dealers are selling potentially lethal laughing gas for 60p a time online.

A Daily Star Sunday probe found suppliers offering to deliver nitrous oxide to customers’ doors.

Our investigator was handed 100 canisters of the gas, dubbed “hippy crack”, with no questions asked by a firm called Megawhip just an hour after ordering.

The chemical has been linked to at least 18 deaths since 2006.

It is not illegal to use or possess but selling it to under-18s can result in up to two years in jail.

It hit the headlines last week when Liverpool and England star Raheem Sterling, 20, was snapped inhaling it from a balloon. The Megawhip site claims it sells the gas for “catering purposes” only and states that customers must be over 18.

But well-spoken dealer Andy handed over the canisters without asking our reporter for ID or what she was going to do with them.

The site advises people not to inhale nitrous oxide but for £5 the courier sold our girl a “cracker” – a metal cylinder used to release the gas into a balloon so it can be taken recreationally.

Megawhip promises to drop off the drug, also known as NOS, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Our investigator handed over £60 in broad daylight to Andy for 100 canisters, which included £10 for delivery and £5 for the cracker.

The gas causes dizziness, tingling, hallucinations and uncontrollable laughter.

The legal high falls into a grey area of the law because it is also used as an anaesthetic by dentists and in catering to whip cream.

It has gained popularity due to its legality and price – a balloon can cost as little as £3 in nightclubs and at gigs.

It is the second most popular drug among young adults after cannabis, according to the Home Office.

Megawhip is only one of countless online firms selling laughing gas canisters.

In February 2014, a British dad-to-be died after taking laughing gas at his home in France.

Chef Jordan Guise, 21, was found dead in Beziers after inhaling it.

Stephen Ream, director of anti-drugs charity Re-Solv, said: “There are people who are making a lot of money out of the grey area of the law, which unfortunately does not legislate against the misuse of non- medical nitrous oxide.”
