Three men killed in M1 crash were not 'West Ham fans' despite tributes

Three men killed in M1 crash were not 'West Ham fans' despite tributes

THREE men who were tragically killed after a coach smashed into their stationary car on a motorway hard shoulder were not West Ham fans – dispute hundreds of tributes on Twitter.

A fourth man was airlifted to hospital suffering from serious injuries.

The triple fatal incident happened on the M1 motorway near Flitwick in Bedforshire as hundreds of people made their half-term getaway on Saturday.

The driver of the Travelmasters coach from Sheerness, Kent was arrested and released on bail.

The coach was carrying a cheerleading team from Kent when it crashed into an Audi on the hard shoulder that the men were travelling in. None of his passengers were injured.

Two of the men who died in the broken-down car were believed to be from Buckinghamshire. The third was from London.

Dozens of people took to social media to express their horror – including former Hammers' star Rio Ferdinand who led the tributes.

He tweeted: "Thoughts are with the families of the 3 West Ham fans who lost their lives travelling to WBA yesterday #whufc

Sam Lane tweeted from his account @officialsamlane: "Hearing that those 3 men killed on the motorway yesterday were West Ham fans on route to WBA. Terrible, doing what a lot of us do weekly RIP

West Ham co-chairman David Gold was also seen re-tweeting about the trio killed in the smash.

A second crash – an hour later – left one man dead and over 45 people needing hospital treatment in a 40 car pile-up on the M40 motorway near Bicester in Oxfordshire.

Chief Insp Henry Parsons, head of Thames Valley Police’s roads police team, said it was a “serious blessing” that only one person had been killed.

He added: “We haven’t been hit by an accident this severe for many years in Thames Valley.

“It does very much touch you personally. It is a horrible scene and ultimately one person has lost their life and several are seriously injured as a result. It is awful, whatever way you dress it up.”

Today two people were killed and another six injured following a crash involving a minibus and a lorry.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said both victims were killed instantly following the accident near Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire.

A man in his 20s is in a critical condition and has been taken to Queen's hospital in Nottingham.

Five others have been taken to a local hospital - one with chest pains and four with minor injuries

“Our thoughts are with all of those involved and their families," said Supt Jane Hewett, from Staffordshire Police.

“We’re currently carrying out enquiries into how this collision happened, gathering evidence from the scene and speaking to witnesses. This is likely to take some time given the nature of the incident.

“At this point, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the responding agencies for their support."
