Preston striker Kevin Davies tears into Manchester United ahead of FA Cup clash
PRESTON striker Kevin Davies has torn into Manchester United and reckons Louis van Gaals troops are miserable.
Davies, 37, is preparing to face United with the League One side in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night.
United have lost just once in 18 matches but they have been below par and forced to grind out results.
Davies said: Just looking at one or two of the players - Robin Van Persie scored on Wednesday night, there was no real smile and he didnt look particularly happy.
Wayne Rooney playing a bit deeper, its probably different to what those players are used to.
Players dont particularly like change anyway, but a new manager comes in with new ways and are they enjoying it as much as they used to? I dont get that impression from the players that they are.
They will have been used to Sir Alex Ferguson for so many years and when it changes, players have to adjust to a different regime.
You are doing double sessions when you maybe are not used to doing them, that kind of thing.
Third-placed United have been blasted for their style of play under Van Gaal and West Ham manager Sam Allardyce described the Reds approach as long ball after the 1-1 draw on Sunday.
Van Gaals responded by showing his analysis of the match at a press conference.
Davies, who played under Allardyce at Bolton, said: I think Sam was obviously having a little sly dig. Thats Sam. He did it to Mourinho last year and got the better of him as well.
I think the response from Van Gaal surprised a few. Well be looking to defend the long sideways passes a bit better, so weve been working on that!
The fans are a bit frustrated with the style of play. Theyre not exciting as they used to be but the club has had big change. When you lose someone like Sir Alex Ferguson its always going to take time.
Mondays meeting at Deepdale will be the first meeting between the sides since 1972.
Davies says Preston will target Uniteds defence.
He said: You have to identify the defence as their weakness. Thats what I certainly feel.
When you consider that David De Gea has been there best player this season something I dont think anyone can argue with hes not been that well protected and without him they wouldnt be in those top four positions, I dont think there is any question about that.
They have spent a lot of money. I really think the squad needs an overhaul and he has started to do that.
