Jeffrey Archer reveals cancer surgery has left him impotent
DISGRACED Tory peer Jeffrey Archer has revealed he is impotent after life-saving surgery to treat prostate cancer.
He said: You can still get the feeling, still get the urge, but you cant do anything about it. Cant do a thing.
You live with it, like anything else. Get on with it.
Lord Archer was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013. His wife Mary, 70, persuaded him to have a check-up after a routine blood test revealed he was at risk.
He was warned of the dangers before he had the op at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, but chose to risk his sex life for a shot at survival.
The 74-year-old added: I didnt want to die of cancer. Archer, who served two years in jail for perjury and perverting the course of justice, has previously revealed his cancer treatment forced him into large nappies and urged other men to get themselves checked out.
The Tory peer was last night praised by health campaigners for his candid confession. Owen Sharp, chief executive of Prostate Cancer UK, said his words would help reduce the stigma surrounding the disease.
He said: Men are getting much better, not only at opening up about their health, but addressing any concerns head-on.
They are much more likely to speak to a friend, for instance, about their health than they used to be. The frank honesty of prominent figures like Lord Archer is boosting this trend enormously.
