Costa Concordia captain gets 16 years in prison
THE CAPTAIN of a cruiser liner, which capsized off the coast of Italy, has been jailed after being found guilty of sinking the Costa Concordia.
Thirty-two people died in January 2012 when the ship steered to close to the island of Giglio and its hull was ripped apart by rocks.
Captain Francesco Schettino cried throughout his final appeal to judges ahead of the verdict for his trial.
He was jailed for 16 years by an Italian court today.
Prosecutors were looking to jail the 52-year-old for 26 years, but he has denied all charges throughout the case.
Schettino claimed he had been offered for sacrifice to protect economic interests between nations.
He said: "I have spent the last three years in a media meat grinder.
"It is difficult to call what I have been living through a 'life'."
He added: "All the responsibility has been loaded on to me with no respect for the truth or for the memory of the victims."
