Big freeze will KILL 25,000 Brits! Experts issue cold snap warning

AROUND 25,000 people could die this winter as freezing conditions arrive from Russia.

Health and transport chiefs are on standby for temperatures to plunge in the New Year.

Cold air over Russia will hit Sweden in the coming weeks and then Britain, said Weather Services International.

January and February will be “much colder” as mild westerly winds lose power.

WSI meteorologist Dr Todd Crawford said: “We suspect January will be colder than December and February will be the coldest of the three winter months.”

Last week Public Health England urged people to stay warm this winter.

Dr Angie Bone, head of extreme events and health protection, said around 25,000 people could die.

She warned: “Thousands die from a range of health conditions – many of which can be linked to cold weather. Most are over 75.

“The sad thing is many deaths are preventable through simple measures.”

The Government will order health staff to contact the elderly, ill and vulnerable if there is heavy snow, widespread ice or if temperatures fall below a 2C average for 48 hours.

Transport bosses who are set to grit roads this week because of predicted -4C lows vowed not to be caught out after mild conditions last winter.

The Highways Agency has 600 gritters and snow-clearing vehicles on standby at 90 depots.

A spokesman said: “We spend 12 months preparing for winter.”

Heathrow Airport, which cancelled 1,000 flights in January 2013’s snow, said it would suspend flights in advance if “severe weather” was due.
